During Leyte Gulf, when it became apparent that the ship could not sustain further damage, her captain, Rear Admiral Inoguchi, attempted to run her aground on a nearby island. Musashi sank at 19:36, having been overwhelmed by 27bomb and 29 torpedoes hits.
