An attack carried out by II Canadian Corps designed to break out of the Normandy lodgment. Strong German defense of Verrieres ridge and active counter attacks inflict heavy casualties and prevent the breakout. Canadians suffer 1500 casualties.

The 2nd and 4th Marine Divisions secured the island after nine days of fighting. The gentler terrain made US artillery and tanks more effective. On the last day the remaining Japanese launched a suicide attack.

650 troops from the 1st and 2nd battalion 105th IR, 27th ID are killed or wounded when their position is overrun by the largest Banzai attack of the world. Over 3000 troops, followed by barely armed walking wounded are killed in the assault.

Soviet breakthrough the Finish defencive lines on the Karelian isthmus and capture Petrozavodsk.

Approximately 50,000 Finish troops successfully defend against 150,000 Soviet troops, convincing the Soviets that an invasion of Finland would be hard and allowing Finland to conclude the war with relatively favourable terms.
